About Paper

Paper is created from thinly pressed cellulose fibers derived from wood or grass. Commonly, these sheets are flexible and brittle, however, when combined and pressed together they are able to provide properties close to their source material (wood).

Description

There are many types of paper made out of different materials, including fabrics, wood, grass, cotton and more. Paper sheets vary in finishes, color, grain, structure, and thickness in order to fulfill different applications. The type used in 3D printing is an ordinary printing/copy paper made out of wood fibers.

3D printing technology that uses paper as a resource is called Laminated object manufacturing or shortly LOM. It uses paper covered with adhesive to construct 3D objects by cutting and pressing together single layers one by one. The end result commonly has specifications close to wood-like pieces.

Common Uses

  • Demonstration models
  • Full-colored prototypes
  • Miniatures

Advantages

  • Affordable
  • Wood-like characteristics
  • Eco-friendly
  • Supports CMYK colors for 360° colored parts

Disadvantages

  • Poor mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance
  • Less precise in comparison to resin curing or powder sintering
